Guro Ferd Terado began his martial arts journey at the age of 17 in traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu karate. Years afterwards he trained in other arts such as Hung-Gar gung-fu, Muay Thai, Capoeira, Jeet Kune Do, before training exclusively in the Pekiti-Tirsia Kali System, where he earned his official rank as Guro under his primary teacher, Tuhon (master) Tim Waid of The Pekiti-Tirsia Kali Global Organization. After moving to Eugene, Ferd established the Hastartes Tactical kali group and met Taekwondo master Tim Greathouse, owner of Core Star Center, where the group currently holds regular kali classes.
Pekiti-Tirsia Kali is a traditional Filipino blade-fighting system from the Panay Islands of the Philippines that emphasizes close-quarters strategies and tactics. It is uniquely adaptable to modern combat and unarmed self-defense. Although their main focus is blade-fighting, all students of The Hastartes are encouraged to learn and train in the use of modern firearms as part of their discipline. Ferd and some of his students are also exploring European sabre swordsmanship primarily through sparring.
Aside from teaching regular classes, Guro Ferd hosts an annual Hastiludia: Oregon State Martial Gathering, an open invitational and weapons-based sparring event in Eugene. Its goal is to promote the warrior ethos and build a community of like-minded individuals from various martial disciplines, who have a particular interest in weapons fighting. In addition, he has been a guest instructor and presenter in many annual martial arts events such as SoCal Swordfight (the largest HEMA event in the US), Legacy: Honoring The Grandmasters, Martial Arts Cultural Exchange (MACE), Oregon State Hanmadang, and Oregon Knife Collectors Association (OKCA). He will be making his debut and sharing some of his knowledge and experience at the upcoming Pacific Martial Arts Conference 2024.
When he isn’t swinging swords and knives, Ferd is an animator in the videogame industry. He has worked on games such as Jedi: Fallen Order, Death Stranding, The Last Of Us: Part 2, Call Of Duty: Vanguard and Modern Warfare 3.
